Review
Upon completion the student should be able to:
Objectives: Chapter 1 Matter and Change
- Distinguish between qualitative and quantitate
measurements.
- Distinguish between the accuracy and the precision of a
measurement.
- Be able to express numbers in scientific notation.
- Identify the number of significant figures in a
measurement.
- Be able to round numbers off to the correct number of
significant figures.
- List and define common SI units and prefixes and be able to
apply the SI units of measurement in chemistry.
- Calculate the experimental density of an object.
- Be able to convert between Celsius and Kelvin
temperatures.
- Name and characterize the three states of matter and changes
that occur from one state to another.
- Be able to classify matter as a substance or mixture,
heterogeneous or homogeneous.
Objectives: Chapter 2 Atoms, ions, moleculae, compounds
- Be able to give the correct symbol for a selected list of
elements and ions.
- Be able to name and write the formula for a selected list of
poly atomic ions.
- Demonstrate how to name compounds given their formulas and to
writre the formulas given their names.
- Describe the basic structure of an atom uising subatomic
particles.
- Explain the difference between elements and a compound. Know
the difference between an element, a molecule and a compound
(SC.A.2.4.2)
- State and apply the law of conservation of mass to chemical
reactions. Understand that there is conservation of mass and
energy when matter is transformed. (SC.B.1.4.2)
