Upon completion the student should be able to:
Objectives: Chapter 5 Chemical Names and Formulas
- Define the term cation and anion
- Distinguish between ionic compounds and molecular
compounds.
- Distinguish among chemical formula, molecular formula and
formula unit.
- Define a polyatomic ion and memorize the names and formulas
for a list of common
- Write correct formula for ionic, molecular compounds.
- Write correct formula for acids
- Name ionic compounds, molecular compounds and acids.
Objectives: Chapter 7
- Identify the reactants and products in a chemical
reaction.
- Apply rules for balancing equations when given the names of
all reactants and products.
- Identify a combination reaction and predict the products of
simple combination reactions.
- Identify a decomposition reaction and predict the products of
simple decomposition reactions.
- Identify a single-replacement reaction and predict the
products of simple single-replacement reactions
- Identify a double-replacement reaction and predict the
products of simple double -replacement reactions
- Identify a combustion reaction and predict the products of
simple combustion reactions.
- Predict the products decomposition, combination,
single-replacement, double-replacement, and combustion
reactions.
- Rewrite and balance net ionic equations.
Objectives: Chapter 6 Chemical Quantities
- Describe how Avogadro's number is related to a mole of any
substance
- Distinguish between the terms gram atomic mass, gram molecular
mass, and gram formula mass.
- Perform calculations converting mass , molecules, volume of a
gas and moles
- Calculate the gram molecular mass of a gas from the density of
the gas at STP
- Calculate the density of a gas at STP
- Calculate the % mass composition of substance from its
chemical formula
- Calculate the empirical formula from experimental data
- Calculate the molecular formula of a compound from
experimental data
