Upon completion the student should be able to:

Objectives: Chapter 18 Reaction Rates and Equilibrium

• Interpret and express the meaning of the rate of a chemical reaction
• Explain how the rate of a reaction is affected by temperature, concentration, particle size and catalysts using collision theory
• Define chemical equilibrium
• Define entropy.
• Define free energy.
• Write the equilibrium constant expression for a reaction.
• Interpret the magnitude of Kc
• Apply LeChatlier's Principle to a chemical equilibrium which has been stressed.

Objectives: Chapter 19 Acids and Bases

• List properties of acids and bases
• Define a Bronsted/Lowery Acid and Base
• Name and write the formula for a variety of acids and bases
• Distinguish between strong and weak acids, strong and weak bases.
• Write the auto-ionization of water
• calculate [H₃O⁺] or [OH^-] from Kw = [H₃O⁺] [OH^-]
• define pH and pOH
• Calculate the pH from [H₃O⁺] or [OH^-]
• Calculate the [H₃O⁺] or [OH^-] from pH or pOH

Objectives: Chapter 20 Acids- Base Neutralization

• Write complete balanced chemical equations for the neutralization of an acid and a base
• Explain the steps of a titration
• Calculate the molarity of an acid given the volume and concentration of a base needed to neutralize it.
• Calculate the volume of an acid needed to neutralize a known volume and molarity of a base
• Identify the produces of any acid/base neutralization reaction

  Workshop Dates: June 18-30, 2006

   

  Description of Workshop:

  This workshop is designed to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, strategies, and methods that have been successful in IB Chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on how to help IB Chemistry teachers from schools who are in the application process better understand the IB curriculum. This course will focus on the development of a chemistry curriculum model, laboratory program, Internal Assessment (IA) rubrics and protocols, external assessment preparation and Group 4 Projects.

   

  Who should attend this workshop:

  Chemistry teachers who are new to IB or are in the IB Diploma Programme application process.

   

  Program Objectives:

  Participants will understand more fully the philosophy of IB Chemistry and the Diploma Programme.

  Participants will understand practices associated with adhering to the philosophy of the IBO and Diploma Programme.

  Participants will understand more fully IBO assessment practices for the Diploma Programme.

  Participants will gain understanding of successful methods of preparing students for Diploma Programme assessments.

  Participants will develop a Chemistry curriculum model to support HL and SL Chemistry.

  Participants will gain understanding of the IB Chemistry laboratory program.

  Participants will gain understanding of Internal Assessment (IA) rubrics and protocols, External Assessment and the Group 4 Project

   

  Materials to bring

  Several samples of your favorite laboratory experiment, demonstration, activity or best

  practice to share. (please provide enough copies for 20 participants)

   

  Workshop Materials:

  A workbook and Chemistry subject guide are included as part of the participants registration fee.
