English IV is a required survey course of British literature, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essays, and drama. Emphasis will be on expressive [personal] writing, transactional [informing, persuading, instructing] writing, poetic [poems, short stories, plays, autobiographical episodes] writing, and writing in response to readings. Be aware of the italicized word writing.

and White’s The Elements of Style

Other literary works may be added or substituted at teacher discretion.

Class material
Pens and pencils, notebook/writing paper. This material is the student’s responsibility.

Graded work
Writing assignments, reader responses, tests, projects, essays, and speeches.

Grading scale
90-100%=A
80- 89% =B
70- 79% =C
60- 69% =D

Grading procedures
All work must be turned in on time; one letter grade will be deducted for every day an assignment is late. One day is allowed for each day of an absence. Progress reports will be issued upon parent request.

Tardiness
As a class, we have work that needs to be completed; therefore, be in class on time or accept the consequences.

Classroom rules
Positive attitude, cooperation, tolerance, and a smile.
